Father Michael Barry, SS.CC.

Born and raised in Cork, Ireland, Fr. Mike Barry, SS.CC., has dedicated more than six decades to priestly ministry, Catholic education, spiritual healing, and compassionate service to those most in need. A graduate of Queen of Peace Seminary, he was ordained to the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SS.CC.) on June 14, 1964. He later earned a Master of Arts in Theology from The Catholic University of America.

Before founding Mary’s Mercy Center, Fr. Mike devoted many years to Catholic education, shaping the lives of countless students and families throughout Southern California. He served as Vice Principal of Bishop Amat Memorial High School and Damien High School, and later as Principal of Mary Star of the Sea High School in San Pedro. His passion for education, faith formation, and servant leadership fostered lifelong relationships that continue to support Mary’s Mercy Center’s mission today.

Throughout his priesthood, Fr. Mike has served in numerous leadership roles, including Provincial of the Western Province of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts in the United States. In recognition of his faithful service to the Church, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon him the distinguished Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award. He also served as Director of the Charismatic Renewal Center for the Diocese of San Bernardino and is widely recognized for his healing ministry through retreats, Healing Masses, Healing of the Family Tree, and spiritual direction. His ministry has always centered on helping individuals encounter Christ’s healing love and mercy.

Inspired by the Gospel call to serve “the least of these,” Fr. Mike founded Mary’s Mercy Center in 1987, beginning with a simple outreach known as Mary’s Table, providing meals and compassionate care to those experiencing poverty and homelessness. Under his visionary leadership, the ministry has expanded to include transitional housing programs such as Mary’s Haven for women and children and Mary’s Village for men, along with comprehensive services that restore dignity, stability, and hope.

Today, Mary’s Mercy Center stands as a living expression of Fr. Mike’s unwavering belief that every person is created in the image of God and deserves to be treated with compassion, respect, and love. His lifelong commitment to the Gospel and to serving the poor continues to inspire volunteers, benefactors, staff, and the countless lives transformed through the ministry.
